Data Synchronization Case Study
The current communication system allows each job site to manually package and send their information over the Internet. This process requires human intervention and has a long lag time between updates. So if a work order has been submitted, there is a high probability that approval for this form will not take place until either the next login or even the following day. Therefore, Larsen & Toubro are seeking enthusiastic software engineers to develop a central database that will drastically reduce the processing time approval for construction projects to commence

Della Steam Plant Case Study
A turbine-generator unit in a power plant vibrates heavily and shakes the building. The problem poses a serious safety risk and could create expensive repair costs if it damages itself or requires major preventative maintenance. Two engineers recommend conflicting solutions, and the plant manager had to make a decision that could cost the company millions of dollars.
This case study helps students learn about technical, financial, safety, and credibility issues involved in decision-making.

Functional Dormitory Design
This case study describes a design problem faced by the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-Madras), a preeminent engineering institution in India, and Larsen & Toubro (L&T), one of India’s largest construction firms. Due to the rapidly increasing student population, IIT-Madras needs to construct more on-campus residences (hostels). However, because it is situated on the beautiful Guidny National Park, the university is restricted to 24% land use.
L&T recently completed a new group of high-rise hostels for IIT-Madras, but the older, sprawling-style hostels remain a popular choice among students. The two designs vary greatly in the areas of thermal comfort and social function. This case study explores how to design thermally comfortable and socially functional spaces while minimizing university land use.

Handbag Design from Rural India
The Gandhi Rural Rehabilitation Center (GRRC) was founded in 1983 to create jobs, such as weaving, tailoring, and embroidery, for low-income, handicapped individuals in the area. However, the center has been producing many of the same designs for at least nine years, leading to decreased consumer interest in the GRRC’s products, and therefore, decreased income for its workers.
